Running in the snow?
January 21, 2011
Well, I've seen dumber things than that like running in high heels through Central Park but at least that was for charity. I mean really, running in the snow? Hey guys - there's this thing called a treadmill, how about hopping on it for a couple of days? The snow this morning is piling up on the NYC sidewalks and streets. I went downstairs this morning to put my trash out and wouldn't you know it, there's a dude running... WITH SHORT ON out there at 7am. Seriously?
First, it's freezing. How about putting some thermals on under those shorts dude? I get some people have to get their fix and all but again... treadmill... If it's not enough to simply remind people that there are righting and equilibrium reflexes that need to go into high gear when you are on terrain like snow, rocks, or even surfing. If you aren't training your body for that type of terrain, don't think just running in the snow is the way to get your reflexes sharpened... it will in fact over wire the nervous system, your joints will brace every time your foot lands on that unstable, slippery sidewalk, and ultimately you will pay a price days after when your ligaments and tendons are freaking out over the need to RUN IN THE SNOW.
I think it's time we all took a reality check, put the sneakers away, put our boots on and went out into Central Park to make a snowman. That sounds like a more practical, realistic idea for a snowy Friday morning in NYC.
Good morning.
about righting and equlibrium reflexes - here's a link to an article on PT on the net. Simple explanation for those interested: http://www.ptonthenet.com/articleprint.aspx?ArticleID=23&m=1741
